Call Management

Do you have other computer programs that use the video camera, microphone, or speakers? This includes Skype™, Google Hangouts™, etc.

If so, check the microphone, speaker, and video camera before each call to ensure that your devices are available by clicking or tapping the Settings button. For more details, refer to Pre-Meeting Checkup.

When Should I Use Video Calling, Online Chat, Voice Call, or Email?

If you're not sure whether you should start a video call, voice call, or text chat, refer to the chart below for the best method of communication, depending on the situation, equipment, and network availability.

Chat works well for:

  • Quick questions
  • Brief interruptions
  • One-on-one informal meetings
  • Coordinating groups

Video Calls work best for:

Extensive, real-time interaction for which body language and tonal cues would be crucial for full communication

Voice Calls work well for:

Meetings with participant(s) who are away from their desks but can be reached by phone

Email works reliably for:

Situations where you don't need an immediate response, or where you want the recipient to have time to think before responding
